maryland reunion, day six: crabcakes and speed scrabble

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

departed the hotel and rented a car.  drove to st. michaels.  spent the day with mom, a lunch of crab cakes and other fine things.  then in the late afternoon went over greg’s wood shop to play ping pong.  i still have some of the touch and some decent backspin, but lost both games 21-19 and (doubles) 21-15.  oh well.  this is a reason to get a ping pong table for the house… one day, i shall be avenged!

had dinner at town dock, a nice little restaurant with an overly nice waiter (if only there was such a thing).  we filled ourselves nicely.  unfortunately the key lime pie was too sweet and not quite tasty enough.  but that was minor — great to see everyone!

back to mom’s, saw kristen ever so shortly, but wished her luck at work in the morning and then on her trip to new york for a bachelorette party.  i’m proud of her working and going to school.  sounds like someone i know…

then to greg and sarah’s for some jamming, speed scrabble, and some good conversation.  showed greg wizard people, dear reader , a classic re-telling of harry potter and the sorceror’s stone with some crude but funny humor overdubbed too much.  a little more chatting about work and future life stuff, and everyone was off to bed, so i took a few minutes to answer mail, blog, and other find things, i’m a computer person, dear reader.

great to play some music, greg! looking forward to next month in the cabin in new york!

maryland reunion, day one

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

so we skipped town for six days in maryland with old family and friends.  super-early flight, arriving at 11am eastern.  slept the whole way, since we stayed up late talking emotions, packing, finishing up work, cleaning the house, and going for a 2am swim under the stars.  how romantic — if only we weren’t bleary-eyed from working too hard and sleep deprivation.

ordered a pizza at nate’s, played with corey and garrett, talked with nate and pat about various life things — ya know, the general catching up and brainstorming that if we were closer probably woul’ve led to starting a company by now.  then we all went down to matt and mara’s in silver spring for a barbeque.  finally had a chance to see their place — they’ve done a great job fixing it up — and to finally meet their children!  cute kids, they is.  sweet of them to have as part of their collection of photos on the wall one of kristin and me when we were so much younger, taken at nate’s wedding…

got a chance to see brett, who had some nice recommendations on two of my stories, which i’m already integrating.  a hige thanks for the ideas, brett!  sounds like he’s still having a good time going to farmers markets and cooking exotic and healthy foods.  still think he should at least once experience austin and texas, but hey, whatever.

saw matt’s brother, greg, who has talked a bunch about moving down to austin with his wife.  the hosts themselves have discussed it numerous times, citing water and air quality as prime motivators, as well as schools.  i think a huge thing could be the much lower cost of living and general lifestyle.  of course, i’m the counterexample to the laid-back image of austin.  but hey, whatever.

then the ride home, which was great — getting garrett to make animal sounds.  we all got a kick out of that, and there was much laughter.  i love it when kids laugh.  that’s about all there is to say about that.

it’s increasingly (painfully) obvious that nate’s ontology and service contacts ought to talk to my company and the research bent to our software.

read up on it here .

i myself am coming out of my shell.  recently handed off a cd of 23 songs to a coworker, and slipped a copy into kristin’s purse.

slow, crawling steps.  tomorrow, myspace, the world next week!

oh, next week, we’ll actually be back east for a reunion of sorts with kristin’s parents and extended family.  we’ll also see if we can catch up with my family while we’re there.

one step/visit at a time…
