Sequences

More than simply hastily arranged playlists or mix tapes, sequences (as defined by Howlingmime) are collections of songs in an order to bring about a particular response in the listener.  These responses are intended to be extended over the course of a session, or listening period related to the narrative.

For example, deejays who work weddings are supposed to keep people on the dance floor; in most cases the more people they lose to their seats the more they’ve underperformed.  Their narrative deals in bpm, genre selection, and decades.

Howlingmime deals in emotions brought about by beats and tones and key sounds found within the tracks he selects.  He also deals in themes, selecting music that propels a central narrative or concept through the sonic space.

His favorite sequence at the moment is Dickie Norman’s Lunchbox.
